I filmed the last thirty years of Sandie starting in 1991. I wanted to show her in an honest, real way. I never looked at any of the footage or started editing until after her funeral in 2022.

As a Director, you are always trying to raise money to make another Hollywood movie, but there are many ways to make films. When I met Sandie, I knew I found someone unique with a powerful spirit. She became the star of my no-budget production.

Her heart, courage and humor drew me in. She always presented herself with complete glamour, despite having a body that people weren’t used to seeing - a body that many didn’t associate with beauty.

She is intersex; A hermaphrodite. We only saw the MRI of her body when she was 55 years old.

When I’d visit Sandie, we'd have a lot of fun, but it was always a reality check. My problems were tiny next to hers and I would always walk away feeling a lot of gratitude for my life.

The movie was shot in an improvisational way, without imposing an agenda, judgement, or structure. I used a variety of techniques to try to get as close to the truth of each moment as I could. I never looked at any footage until after her funeral in 2022. I started editing and continue to in 2026

I never imagined it would be a 35 year long production.

This film a love letter to the outsiders, the queer kids, the artists, the disabled community — anyone who’s felt unseen, unwanted, and unloved.
